Double Funding for Bet Tzedek Legal Services for Tenants!

Housing rights legal services provider Bet Tzedek starts the new fiscal year with a 100% bump-up in funding to provide more extensive tenant and senior housing legal services to Beverly Hills residents. Great news because eviction actions are on the rise. But the funding almost didn’t happen when City Council balked at spending $220,000. Cedars Sinai stepped in to save the day with a one-time matching grant.

Heads Landlords Win, Tails Tenants Lose

Remember when City Council proclaimed a housing crisis and drafted an urgency ordinance to tame runaway rents and require relocation fees? As a result so-called ‘mom-and-pop’ landlords besieged City Hall with an assist from the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles. If unchecked they will gobble up the loaf of protections that Council baked for us in January.

Tenants score a big win at City Council!

Beverly Hills City Council felt your pain last night. Gone are 10% rent increases and evictions without relocation fees. In a meeting that stretched to beyond midnight, Council heard many persuasive tenant accounts of investing in community only to be tossed out summarily or hounded out by capricious and excessive rent hikes. Around 1 am City Council used a seldom-invoked urgency ordinance to approve critical reforms to the rent stabilization ordinances.
