On the Agenda: Exemptions for Up to 1,000 RSO Units

On Beverly Hills City Council’s Tuesday agenda is a consequential proposal to exempt all duplexes and owner-occupied 3-unit and 4-unit buildings from rent stabilization. That could mean more than 1,100 renting households lose tenant protections like a cap on annual rent increases and relocation fees. We argued against exemptions but Council seems disposed to at least some kind of exemption.

Heads Landlords Win, Tails Tenants Lose

Remember when City Council proclaimed a housing crisis and drafted an urgency ordinance to tame runaway rents and require relocation fees? As a result so-called ‘mom-and-pop’ landlords besieged City Hall with an assist from the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles. If unchecked they will gobble up the loaf of protections that Council baked for us in January.

Beverly Hills neighbors, now is the time to pay attention! We are looking ahead to an important City Council meeting on February 21st where key tenant protections will be on the agenda. Renters Alliance has been huddling with a few supporters over the past week to print a flyer, get a website up and generally to get the word out. We are on our way.
